About Surya Dev
Surya, also known as Aditya or the Sun God, is a prominent deity in Hinduism. He is considered the solar deity and is worshipped as the source of light, energy, and life on Earth. Surya plays a significant role in Hindu mythology and has both cosmic and personal aspects. Here are some key aspects and stories associated with Surya: Cosmic Significance: Surya is considered the source of light and energy in the universe. In Hindu cosmology, he is often depicted as driving a chariot drawn by seven horses across the sky, symbolizing the seven days of the week. This chariot is said to be pulled by horses named after the seven colors of the rainbow. Family: Surya is the son of Sage Kashyapa and Aditi, and he is the brother of other important deities, including Agni (the god of fire) and Indra (the king of gods). His wife is Usha (the goddess of dawn), and their children include the Ashvins (twin gods of medicine) and Yama (the god of death). Chhaya and Sanjna: Surya's wife, Sanjna, was unable to bear the intense heat of his radiance. To escape his fiery presence, she created a shadowy duplicate of herself named Chhaya and left her in her place. Sanjna, in the form of a mare, later underwent penance and became a mare in a forest. Eventually, Surya reunited with her in her original form. Gayatri Mantra: The Gayatri Mantra, one of the most revered and powerful mantras in Hinduism, is dedicated to Surya. It is a prayer to the Sun God, seeking the illumination of the mind and spiritual awakening. Surya Namaskar: Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, is a series of yoga postures and movements dedicated to Surya. It is a common practice in yoga and is believed to have physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. Rituals and Worship: Surya is often worshipped at sunrise, and devotees offer water, flowers, and prayers to the Sun God. Festivals dedicated to Surya, such as Chhath Puja, are observed in various parts of India.
