About Janmashtami
Janmashtami is a Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It typically falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (August-September). The festival is observed with great devotion and enthusiasm across India. Devotees fast, sing devotional songs, and recite verses from the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred text believed to be spoken by Lord Krishna. Temples are decorated with flowers and lights, and elaborate ceremonies are conducted to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight. One of the most popular rituals of Janmashtami is the Dahi Handi, where young men form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd or butter suspended from a height. This reenacts Krishna's childhood pastime of stealing butter from pots hanging from the ceilings of homes in his village, Gokul. Janmashtami symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the divine presence of Lord Krishna on Earth. It is a time for reflection, devotion, and joyous celebration among devotees of Lord Krishna.
